Madara is situated 72 km west from Varna, at about 50 minutes drive from Varna international airport, 12 km from Shumen and 10 km far from the first Bulgarian capital Pliska.

The present village of Madara is situated at 1.5 km far from the history-architecture reserve “Madara”, famous for the hewn into the rock, 23 meters high, on a vertical rock, unique in Europe, rock relief – Madarski konnik (Madara horserider). The wealth of the found archeological monuments dated before 4000 B.C. up to XV century, gives grounds for the archaeologist to call Madara “The Bulgarian Troy”.

The most remarkable monument in the reserve is the unique rock relief Madarski konnik. Unique in Europe it is symbol of the Old-Bulgarian art and symbolizes the power and the majesty of the Bulgarian state. The inscriptions around it, in Greek, reveals the feats of three Bulgarina khans – Tervel, Krum and Omurtag. Since 1972 Madarski konnik is announced by UNESCO for monument with world significance. In history, Madara is also known as religious center. Here man can see sanctuaries, heathen shrine, Christian churches, chapels.

Round about there are inscriptions in Greek of the time of khan Tervel (701-718), khan Kormisosh (739-756) and khan Omurtag (716-831). They represent chronicles of their war and diplomatic victories over the Byzantine emperors. This is the most ancient documentary written record for the Bulgarian State. In the terrace on the left under the rock relief, there are ruins of buildings of different ages – castles, proto-Bulgarians’ heathen sanctuary dated IX century, churches and monasteries dated XI – XIV century.

Rock ladder with 386 steps climbs the Madara plateau. The ladder reaches the Madara fortress. It is naturally protected place, approachable only from North, where the 3 meters tall fortress wall, which is partly preserved, was built. The fortress was called Matora. It exists up to 1386, when conquered by the Ottomans.

In the southwest foot of the plateau are the ruins of the so-called Roman villa – actually it is a complex of residence and farm buildings of a Roman estate. The residence building had 43 premises around a square courtyard.

In XIV century, in the rocks of the plateau, was made the biggest in Bulgaria rock monastery with over 150 cells.
The present village of Madara has about 1 300 residents and offers any conveniences for living and tourism.
